According to a study published in PLOS Genetics, yes!
The study followed 23 men for 6 months all who were overweight slightly, healthy and did not engage in physical activity. The men were instructed to do a spinning class 3 times a week, not change eating habits or daily activity level.
The men averaged 2 spinning classes a week. The results revealed epigenetic changes had taken place in 7,000 genes; 35% of an individuals make-up. They also found changes at genes linked to type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Epigenetics studies changes in gene expression on a cellular level. Methyl groups are molecules that reside within genes including fat cells. Methyl groups affect gene expression which determines whether genes are deactivated (turned off) or activated (turned on).
Researches are looking at altered DNA methylation and disease which can be useful in future treatments.
One more reason to exercise weekly.
